The purpose of this ritual is to attain a vision of your Higher Self in the form of the God of the Sun. It is based on the so called Liturgy of Mithras and it is a tricky ritual to do. It is a really ancient ritual (which is why some of it is a difficult read) and the original can be found here. I have placed it within a Golden Dawn ritual structure because I know that can produce the right level of purification and consecration required. You should prepare carefully for the ritual beforehand with a ritual bath. The ritual should be performed on a Sunday at noon.  You should not do the ritual when the Sun in your chart is undergoing a difficult transit or on a cloudy day. It is important that you can see sunlight where you perform the ritual.

The God Mithras killing the Bull
The God Mithras killing the Bull

You should create a chart for yourself with your natal chart in an inner wheel with the transits for the  time that you will do the ritual on the outer wheel.  On top of the chart should be written THRAPSIARI MORIROK and on the bottom EORO RORE ORRI ROR ROI. This chart should be placed on top of the tablet of equilibrium on the altar. The elemental tablets should be set up as the Portal ritual. This ritual requires part pathworking and part ritual. I will describe what you are supposed to see but that was based on my own experience (and hints in the original ritual), you might see something differently. The vibration of the vowels for each of the seven main gods is long and hard. Each one will sound different, but you should not change speed midway through a vibration.  If you start one and one speed you should continue at that speed.

 The Ritual

Perform the Lesser Invoking ritual of the Pentagram and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram. Finally the Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram to open the Elemental Quarters. At each of the quarters attempt to contact the elemental force and request that they help you to attain a vision of your Divine Self. Purify and consecrate the space (GD types should use the the 0=0 ceremony using the Godform of Nephysis (for water) and Isis (for Fire) ) Face the sun and say the First Invocation:

Origin of my origin, AEEIOYO, first beginning of my beginning, PPP SSS PHR spirit of spirit, the first of the spirit in me, MMM, fire given by god to my mixture of the mixtures in me, the first of the fire e in me, EY EIA EE, water of water, the first of the water in me, OOO AAA EEE, earthy substance, the first of the earthy substance in me, YE YOE, my complete body I, (your name) whose mother is (your mother’s name), which was formed by a noble arm and an incorruptible right hand in a world without light and yet radiant, without soul and yet alive with soul, YEI AYI EYOIE: now if it be your will, METERTA PHOTH, YEREZATH, give me over to immortal birth and, following that, to my underlying nature, so that, after the present need which is pressing me exceedingly, I may gaze upon the immortal beginning with the immortal spirit, ANCHREPHRENESOYPHIRIGCH, with the immortal water, ERONOYI PARAKOYNETH, with the most steadfast air, EIOAE PSENABOTH; that I may be born again in thought, KRAOCHRAX R OIM ENARCHOMAI, and the sacred spirit may breathe in me, NECHTHEN APOTOY NECHTHIN ARPI ETH; so that I may wonder at the sacred fire, KYPHE; that I may gaze upon the unfathomable, awesome water of the dawn, NYO THESO ECHO OYCHIECHOA, and the vivifying ,and encircling aether may hear me, ARNOMETHPH; for today I am about to see with immortal eyes.  I who was born mortal from mortal womb, but transformed by a tremendous power and an incorruptible right hand and with immortal spirit of the immortal Aion and Master of the fiery diadems. While there subsists within me, holy, for a short time, my human soul-might, which I will again receive after the present bitter and relentless necessity which is pressing down upon me. For I am the son PSYCHON DEMOY PROCHO PROA, I am MACHARPH. N MOY PROPSYCHON PROE!” Breath in and as you do imagine that the light of the sun is being drawn into your lungs.  Do this until you feel light and imagine yourself rising up into the clouds. Slightly above you is the solar disk but in the clouds are the Gods of the planets. Below the sun you will see a vortex of power which radiates a divine power, just as the sun disk radiates light.  The Gods will notice you and might come towards you aggressively (it did not happen to me, but I am taking the ritual’s word for it.)  Put your right finger on your mouth and say: “Silence! Silence! Silence! Symbol of the living, incorruptible god! Guard me, Silence, NECHTHEIR THANMELOY!” Then make a long hissing sound, next make a popping sound, and say: PROPROPHEGGE MORIOS PROPHYR PROPHEGGE NEMETHIRE ARPSENTEN PTTETMI MEOY ENARTH PHYRKECHO PSYRIDARIO TYRE PHILBA.” The gods will looking graciously upon you and no longer rushing at you, and go about their own business.  When you see that the world above is clear and circling and that none of the gods or angels is threatening you, expect to hear a great crash of thunder (or a sudden noise) to attempt to shock you back into you body.

“Silence! Silence! I am a star, wandering about with you, and shining forth out of the deep, OXYIO O XERTHEYTH.” The sun’s disk expands.  And after you have said the second prayer make a hissing sound twice and a popping sound twice, and you will see pentagrams coming forth from the disk and filling all the air. Then say again:   “Silence! Silence!” The sun disk will open and you will see the fireless circle, and the fiery doors shut tight At once close your eyes and recite the following prayer.

“Give hear me  I(your name) l whose mother is (your mother’s name), O Lord, you who have bound together with your breath the fiery bars of the fourfold root, O Fire-Walker, PENTITEROYNI, Light-Maker and Light Encloser, SEMESILAM, Fire-Breather, PSYRINPHEY, Fire-Feeler, IAO, Light-Breather, OAI, Fire-Delighter, ELOYRE, Beautiful Light, AZAI, Aion, ACHBA, Light-Master, PEPPER PREPEMPIPI, Fire-Body, PHNOYENIOCH, Light-Giver, Fire-Sower, AREI EIKITA, Fire-Driver, GALLABALBA, Light-Forcer, AIO, Fire-Whirler, PYRICHIBOOSEIA, Light-Mover, SANCHEROB, Thunder-Shaker, IE OE IOEIO, Glory-Light, BEEGENETEE Light-Increaser, SOYSINEPHIEN, Fire-Light-Maintainer, SOYSINEPHI ARENBARAZEI MARMARENTEY, Star-Tamer: open for me, PROPROPHEGGE EMETHEIRE MORIOMOTYREPHILBA, Open for me because of the pressing and bitter and inexorable necessity, I face. Draw nigh, O Lord! Do the above chant seven times, one for each of the  seven immortal gods of the world When you have said these things, you will hear thundering and shaking in the surrounding realm; and you will likewise feel yourself being shaken. Then say again: “Silence! Silence! I am a star, wandering about with you, and shining forth out of the deep, OXYIO O XERTHEYTH.”  The doors open and the world of the gods which is within the doors, so that from the pleasure and joy of the sight your spirit runs ahead and ascends. Draw in  breath from the divine world into yourself several times. You will feel refreshed and restored. Then say: “Come, Lord, ARCHANDARA PHOTAZA PYRIPHOTA ZABYTHIX ETIMENMERO PHORATHEN ERIE PROTHRI PHORATHI.” When you have said this, the rays of the Sun will turn toward you; look at the centre of them. For when you have done this, you will see a youthful god, beautiful in appearance, with fiery hair, and in a white tunic and a scarlet cloak, and wearing a fiery crown. At once greet him with the fire-greeting: “Hail, O Lord, Great Power, Great Might, King, Greatest of gods, Helios, the Lord of heaven and earth, God of gods: mighty is your breath; mighty is your strength, O Lord. If it be your will, announce me to the supreme god, the one who has begotten and made you. Help me (your name) who was born from the mortal womb of (your mother’s name)  and from the fluid of semen, and who, since he has been born again from you today, has become immortal out according to the wish of god the exceedingly good.  I give you all my human power (place your hand on the horoscope.) so that I will know you. After you have said these things, Helios will come to the celestial pole, and you will see him walking as if on a road.  Look intently and make a long bellowing sound, like a horn, releasing all your breath and straining your sides.  Then kiss your horoscope and say to your right hand: “Protect me, PROSTMERE” After saying this, you will see the doors thrown open, and seven women coming from deep within, dressed in linen garments, and with the faces of asps. They are the Fates of heaven, and wield golden wands. When you see them, greet them in this manner: “Hail, Oh seven Fates of heaven, You who are noble and good, Oh sacred ones and companions of MINIMIRROPHOR, Ohmost holy guardians of the four pillars! Hail to you, the first, CHREPSENTHAES! Hail to you, the second, MENESCHEES! Hail to you, the third, MECHRAN! Hail to you, the fourth, ARARMACHES! Hail to you, the fifth, ECHOMMIE! Hail to you, the sixth, TICHNONDAES! Hail to you, the seventh, EROY ROMBRIES! Then there will come seven other gods, who have the faces of black bulls, in linen loin-cloths, and in possession of seven golden diadems. They are the so-called Pole-Lords of heaven, whom you must greet in the same manner, each of them with his own name: “Hail, 0 guardians of the pivot, Oh sacred and brave youths, who turn at one command the revolving axis of the vault of heaven, who send out thunder and lightning and jolts of earthquakes and thunderbolts against the nations of impious people, but to me, who am pious and god-fearin you send health and soundness of body, and acuteness of hearing and see  and calmness in the present good hours of this day, Oh my Lords you are the ruling Gods! Hail to you, the first, AIERONTHI! Hail to you, the second, MERCHEIMEROS! Hail to you, the third, ACHRICHIOYR! Hail to you, the fourth, MESARGILTO! Hail to you, the fifth, CHICHROALITHO! Hail to you, the sixth, ERMICHTHATHOPS! Hail to you, the seventh, EORASICHE!” Now when they take their place look in the air and you will see lightning-bolts going down, and lights flashing, and the earth shaking, and a god descending, a god immensely great, having a bright appearance youthful, golden-haired, with a white tunic and a golden crown and trousers and holding in his right hand a golden shoulder of a young bull: this is the Bear which moves and turns heaven around, moving upward and downward in accordance with the hour. Then you will see lightning-bolts leaping from his eyes and stars from his body. And at once produce a long bellowing sound, straining your belly, that you may excite the five senses: bellow long until the conclusion, say: “MOKRIMO PHERIMOPHERERI, life of me, (your name)  stay! Dwell in my soul! Do not abandon me, for one entreats you, ENTHO PHENEN THROPIOTH.” And gaze upon the god while bellowing long; and greet him in this manner: “Hail, Oh Lord, Oh Master of the water! Hail, Oh Founder of the earth! Hail, Oh  Ruler of the wind! O Bright Lightener , PROPROPHEGGE EMETHIRI ARTENTEPI THETH MIMEO YENARO PHYRCHECHO PSERI DARIO PHRE PHRELBA! O Lord, while being born again, I am passing away; while growing and having grown, I am dying; while being born from a life-generating birth, I am passing on, released to death– as you have founded, as you have decreed, and have established the mystery. I am PHEROYRA MIOYRI. Now is the time that you talk to your Higher Self. What happens will be up to you and it.  In my experience he talks in visions and fragments which have a deep effect but do not provide “intellectual” information as such… just transformation.   When you have finished thank him and allow yourself to return to Earth.

As you would expect the results of my version of the ritual are extremely personal.  I tried to stick to the rite as it was written and it took a long time.  It was however worth it.  Even as I am writing this images from the working pop into my head and bring different understandings.  I found that at one point although I could clearly see the “god” he was as if he was projected onto the clouds.  When I asked that the clouds be removed, he said that it was me that put them there.  There were other moments where I found myself inexplicably in the darkness of a void. And the God would suddenly appear.  There was one moment halfway through the ritual where the shadow of the God approached and hit me with an energy so strong I nearly fell over.   In fact the revelations of this ritual have been coming over a few days and were not isolated to this ritual.  The God appeared to give me visions of what was supposed to be and not what it was, or what I felt it to be.

The Kybalion is a “must have” occult text for beginners for many years and it was a big influence on me and other members of Builders of the Adytum thanks to a myth that Paul Foster Case was one of the anonymous writers.

This is the version I grew up with.
This is the version I grew up with.

More recently, one of its ideas “the Law of Attraction” was hijacked in the New Age Marketing phenomenon which was the “The Secret.”

As I have progressed along the path, the Kybalion ideas have become less important to me, mostly because they do not do what is claimed.

The Seven Principles or Laws

For those who came in late the Kybalion said that there are seven principles or laws by which the universe works. These are:

The Principle of Mentalism: All is Mind.

Principle of Correspondence: There is always a correspondence between the laws of phenomena of the various “planes” of being and life. There is a harmony, agreement and correspondence between these planes, “The Physical Plane,” “The Mental Plane” and the “Spiritual Plane.”

Principle of Vibration: Motion is manifest in everything in the Universe, that nothing rests, and everything moves, vibrates, and circles. To change one’s mental state is to change vibration. One may do this by an effort of Will, by means of deliberately “fixing the attention” upon a more desirable state.

Principle of Polarity: Everything is dual, everything has two poles, and everything has its opposite. These extremes meet, and all paradoxes may be reconciled.

Principle of Rhythm: Everything there is manifested a measured motion backward and forward in a pendulum-like movement.

Principle of Cause and Effect: There is a cause for every effect, and an effect for every cause. There is no such thing as chance, that chance is merely a term indicating extant causes not recognized or perceived.

Principle of Gender: Gender is manifested in everything as the Masculine and Feminine principles, and manifests itself on all planes. The Masculine principle is always in the direction of giving out or expressing, and contents itself with the “Will” in its varied phases. The Feminine principle is always in the direction of receiving impressions, and has a much more varied field of operation than the Masculine.

There is a lot here  that makes sense, but the danger in the Kybalion is taking them at face value and assuming they are absolute laws that apply to magic.  They don’t.

William WalkerAtkinson (Wikipedia)
William WalkerAtkinson (Wikipedia)

William Walker Atkinson

Firstly the book itself was written by William Walker Atkinson by himself, the Kybalion which the book quotes never existed.  Now I am not going to sound off about the book being a fraud. It does not really matter who wrote it if the information was valid.

Atkinson was a proponent of the new Thought Movement, something which was a big influence on Paul Case. He was also a big fan of writing anonymous works normally under the name Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka. New Thought had the idea that God, is everywhere, spirit is the totality of real things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, sickness originates in the mind, and “right thinking” has a healing effect. It also says that all disease is mental in origin. So in otherwords if you sit and visualise what you want with enough emotional power you will get it. This was the basis behind Paul Case’s Seven Steps and he claimed that it was the keys to magic; he applied to psychology and claimed that visualisation altered the unconscious thinking and as a result transformed your existence.

This is all somewhat true. Nevertheless, it is part of the trap of with occult ideas. If a law or principle is true it can be tested. The Kybalion only shows positive proof of its ideas, it does not reveal the negatives or the numerous “get out clauses” which the universe uses apparently to by-pass these so called rules.

Therefore, you are left with the conclusion that these are ideas which sometimes work and therefore cannot be anything like laws of the universe.  Some of my objections might seem like nit-picking but you find small things that don’t work, then the law must fail.

Principle of Mentalism: While I can accept that the Universe is all mind, I can’t accept that is all there is. A mind, or consciousness, is definable. It has rules which can define it. Yet there must equally be an infinite part of god which can only be defined by what it is not – and it would NOT be mind. If Thoth is an expression of the Divine Mind, he emerged from the UNKNOWABLE darkness.

Principle of Correspondence: While it is true that anything that happens on one plan CAN manifest on another, that does not mean that it actually does. Because a person has an idea for new building does not mean that such a construction will necessarily see life on earth. A huge number of ideas never make it into manifestation, and equally a large number of rituals on the physical plane do not work.

Principle of Vibration: All things are in motion and vibrate. This is somewhat true again and that stability appears to be an illusion. But it depends on relativity. An atom is stable relative to itself, while the solar system might be moving it is held stable by gravity.  If you put a stone on a table in front of you it does not move. It is not arguable to say “it moves very slowly and you can’t detect it” in actual fact it stays still relative to everything else.

Principle of Polarity: Despite it being a separate law this has similarities to the law of gender. I have divided them out so that the law of Gender is specifically talking about sex and NOT positive and negative duality. Heaven forbid that the “Three Adepts” only saw a difference because seven is a perfect number and six would require them to make up something different.

Anyway, I am not sure that this is literally true and if it were then it would counter the first law, which says the universe is one thing and Mind. Certainly, the Physicist David Bohm did see evidence that the world was dualistic. He thought that information (mind) is just as important as substance/intensity (matter/energy). And one cannot be reduced to the other. That means our world is not One Thing.

Like I said I do not believe in the duality of extremes, I don’t believe there is pure good or evil in our world, but abstractly about 40 shades of grey. I have a feeling that it simply appears dualistic but this is not actually the case.

Principle of Rhythm: This does not always happen at all. Light for example behaves as a wave (rhythm) and a particle. It is possible to create objects which do not operate in a rhythmic way. Evolution is not rhythmic.

Principle of Cause and Effect: Again this is sort of.  It was a standard scientific belief in the past which works but is getting a kicking by modern science. This is an area for research could mean that rather than this being an occult absolute it is actually just old science.

There are also philosophical problems with the Law of Cause and Effect. If A causes B then A always has to come first. Therefore, war causes death. However, since war does not always cause death and death is not always caused by war, it is more likely you can say that A is more likely to cause B. This kills off the part of the law. If you can only generate a probability of the same effect from the same cause then it means you must have some doubt about your cause or there is an inherent randomness about the universe which can nullify cause and effect.

The Principle of Gender: Now I know that this is supposed to be a figurative thing, but the laws are supposed to be applied to all of creation. There are there numerous situations within Nature where polarity does not exist, ranging from amoebas, to yeast, to snakes. The fact that parthenogenesis is possible means that polarity does not always apply to the physical world. This means that it probably does not always apply to the mental or spiritual worlds either.

No doubt people will find fault with my logic, philosophy and science methods, but that will not really be the point.  The issue here is that there are doubts whether or not the Kybalion produces an absolute set of “laws” worthy for a magician. Given the absolute tone of the book, you have to question if its status in an occultist’s bookshelf is really worthy, or if it is just a collection of fake-science manifesting as occult truth.

The 20th and 21st century has been marked by a rise in religious fundamentalism. It is as if that faced with technology and economic change, the established religions have returned to the comfort of a literal interpretation of their creeds.  The first moves towards religious fundamentalism were started by the Christians in the late 19th century and were copied by the Muslims in the early 20th. (one of the best books to read on the subject its Robert Gilbert’s Cast the First Stone).

6,000 years is nothing

Essentially fundamentalism claims that there is an absolute truth to be discovered within the texts of a religious faith. Often these texts are selected by a panel of other fundamentalists.  Christians fundamentalists are often influenced by verses calling for the death of gay people but ignore other verses in the Bible which are equally as daft. They also believe that the world was created in seven days and is only 6,000 years old on the mistaken belief that the Bible says that. Muslim fundamentalists call for the lowering of status of women, not because the Koran says that, but because the tribal traditions think so.

The payoff for fundamentalism is certainty. You know where you are with your religion because it is written down and you can’t fuck it up. However, it does not favour anyone who thinks, or asks questions.

But this desire to find certainty in an uncertain world contaminates the development of any magical tradition. Wicca, which is more of a religion anyway, has a fundamentalist streak of people who insist that the “burning times” were a fact and that millions of witches were burnt at the stake.

The same applies to the Golden Dawn.

Within the Golden Dawn, you will find those who search for old papers, which are often above their grade anyway, and quote them as an authority for whatever they want to mean. The assumption is that Mathers and Westcott were inspired by god to write the various documents they did with a Biblical authority.

Yet there are some problems with this. It assumes that the Golden Dawn sprang fully formed in 1888 and that there ever was a true paper. The Golden Dawn started out as a re-write of a skeletonic manuscript   called the Ciphers. This envisaged a five-degree system based on the elements and dealing with the lower part of the tree of life.  The ciphers hinted at a 5=6. Mathers banged out a quasi-masonic system, which admitted women, and the whole thing was entirely unmagical. It appeared to have more in common with the SRIA of its day in that there was an opening and closing, testing of knowledge and people provided papers.

Are there any women in the order today?

However it was clear that this was not enough and Mathers then wrote a portal ritual to go with it, however again this was not a magical ritual. A true Golden Dawn fundamentalist who believes that the Cipher documents were the trigger point of the Order would have to say that anything beyond the 4=7 was a heresy. He or she would have to say that Mathers was possessed by an evil force when he attempted to add other grades and bring in MAGIC. And if you think this idea is weird it is something I have heard some people actually say!

It was not until Mathers went to Paris that the magical side of the Golden Dawn was created. Not only was there a vault and a 5=6 ritual the outer order papers were retrofitted with magical instructions called the Z documents.

Theoretically, this would be the high point of the Golden Dawn if you wanted a magical system. If you were going to be a fundamentalist, you would say that these were “perfect.” You would be wrong.

Mathers had not finished writing what would be seen as key Golden Dawn documents until much later. He finished the ThAM papers only a few months before the schism and much of the material you would accept as Golden Dawn came from these papers. If you were to take *this* was the high point for the Golden Dawn Magic System you would fail again.

After the schism, the portal was rewritten by a person, or persons unknown. It turned the god-awful portal ritual into something which magically fitted better as a pivot for the outer and inner order. True this ritual was a little clunky, but it was much better than what went before it. Until I printed Mathers Last Secret, the earlier ritual was mostly unknown, indeed most considered the later ritual as the GD canon.

Secondly, the Second Order of the Golden Dawn stopped at ThAM with no more rituals or teaching. Mathers’ AO and Felkin’s Stella Matutina carried on these grades and fleshed out the some of the earlier teachings.

In essence, the Golden Dawn never had a fundamentalist point in which it was complete and could be used as a complete system. Nor was it possible to point to written cannon of work which was finished.  Papers within the GD were rewritten over time so an earlier paper might be merged into another one, rewritten completely, or abandoned completely. Imagine what this would be like for a fundamentalist Christian if a panel of priests did something similar to the book of Revelation.

The Black Book, some would make this a bible for the Golden Dawn

Some have attempted to enforce a degree of fundamentalism within the GD by saying that the “black book” of Israel Regardie (minus the worthless introduction) should be seen as the Bible of the Golden Dawn and straying from that would be heresy. As Pat Zalewski pointed out in his books, Regardie’s cut down rituals break important parts of the Golden Dawn magical system so using that as your “bible” was unadvisable.

The issue here is that the Golden Dawn as a magical system is evolving.  Because something was written down does not mean that it was perfect or “right.”  It was just based on the information that Mathers and others had at the time.

When the Magical Order of the Aurora Aurea withdraw from the Golden Dawn egregore one of the reasons was to separate itself from those who insisted that we limit ourselves to their fundamentalist ravings.  What might give them certainty and comfort, is actually anti-magic and anti-magical development.

Take for example the 5=6. Most people in the Golden Dawn see the 5=6 ritual as the finest thing that Mathers came up with. With its vault, the 5=6 is a truly impressive ritual. When I had to pull apart the 5=6 for MOAA so that I could understand it from a magical perspective, I found next to nothing written about it. What I had to do is gather people’s responses to key parts in the ritual. In the end I had to point someone through the rite and see what happened.

The result was interesting. The ritual worked well and made sense right up to the symbolic death of the candidate. Then it got silly. There were symbols there which were simply wrong, or described in the wrong way and in the wrong place.  Most of the problems could be fixed with an edit or a slight change of technique, but that could not cover the one significant howler.

The candidate has symbolically died and they are led into the tomb to meet their Higher Self in the form of Christian Rosenkreuz. He finds him dead. He touches his dead body and the corpse speaks, but remains dead.  There is no resurrection in the grade.  The candidates lower self is sacrificed and pushed down to the Qlippoth but never has a meaningful awakening with its higher. Lately several modern Golden Dawn people have started to see the problems here and started to tinker with this part of the ritual to make it work properly.

So is there any advantage in being a Golden Dawn fundamentalist? Only if you are a bit dim and like an imagined certainty. But if you want to be a magician you have to accept that every piece of paper you read in the GD is a suggestion for an experiment, rather than meant to be carved on stone.  If you want certainty you should really give up being a Magician because it is all evolving and all changing.

The Internet has bought many problems to occult teaching.  Often teaching is dumbed down into a mem or a slogan which may or may not be right but just sounds cool.  Soon people start to believe it and it becomes difficult to shake from people’s mind.

For a few months I have had fun looking at mems people have been posting and typing in the headline and the then the world hoax or debunked into Google.   You will be amazed at how many “facts” online are made up by people who are trying to sell you something – either politics or a belief.  What is even stranger is how angry people get when you tell them that they have been taken in by a hoax.

The occult path is full of people that believe things.  In fact it almost goes with the territory that something in your belief pattern will make someone else go WTF!

But lately I have noticed that there is a certain intransigence about these beliefs particularly those read on the Internet and an almost fundamentalist approach to defending the indefensible.

There has always been a problem with people making connections between different bodies of teaching, particularly the East and the Western systems.  The logic is that because a symbol exists in the East it must have the same meaning as the one in the West.  Often they don’t and more often they mean the opposite.  Take for example the colour red.  In the West it is Mars and action. In China it is good luck and not much to do with Mars at all.

The only way this could be a lotus wand is if the person was standing on their head or the wand was upside down!

Then there is the issue of sex force kundalini, which in the East is represented by a snake.  This term has been popularised by western occultists who often fail to understand its Eastern meanings. So when they see a serpent rising on the Tree of Life they assume that it is this is kundalini. It isn’t.

On Facebook I had a heated discussion with someone who believed that the Golden Dawn lotus wand represented the spinal column and the energy which you invoke through the Lotus is kundalini.  It is true there are points in the eastern system which do correspond to the Zodiac and Israel Regardie, who tended to see kundalini everywhere, also equated the two.  Regardie should have known better.  The colours of the charkras in tantra are fairly specific and the base charkra is always depicted as being read and the highest brow charkra is violet.  If you look at a lotus wand you will see that is the literal opposite of this arrangement and the only way the two could be connected is if the Lotus Wand was held upside down (something Golden Dawn people are forbidden to do).

I am finding that I am having more conversations with people who demand that I accept that black is white or there is something wrong with me.  More over if I point out the wrongness of an argument I am “full of hate” or “negative.”

It is not that I am always right, everyone makes mistakes, but I believe what I am saying.  If I know something is correct I will generally stick to my guns.  So if you insist that there was sex magic in the Golden Dawn, Apple are a super cool company, or  Mathers was a god, then you will find me disagreeing.

This disagreement is a sign that I think an argument is wrong, it is not an indication that I am “not being spiritual”.  In fact it is the opposite.  Immediately after my portal initiation I found that I was unable to bite my tongue, or tell a lie.  It seemed part of my nature to “say it how I saw it.”  This instantly became inconvenient to those who don’t.  It was not as if I was shooting my mouth off, it was that I was telling the truth as best I could. It was a very solar approach.  There was no diplomacy involved and people are easily offended.

But this is a problem.  If you are an occult leader you are supposed to sit there and smile as people talk bollocks at you.  If you don’t there is something wrong with you.  One of my old teachers used to smile at such types in the hope that one of his other students would see him and rescue him.

The problem is that people have a perception of what a spiritual teacher is supposed to be and it is not the sort of person that real occultism generates.  In fact magic should generate someone to does not mess around and tells you what is wrong.  It risks pissing people off but in the entire history of occultism I have only found one occultist who did not managed to piss someone off.  Ernest Butler, the writer of Magician, his training and work, appeared to be a living incarnation of a Christian master.  I mention him because by comparison all the others I have seen had a tendency to flashes of impatience or to undiplomatically tell a student what was wrong with them.

But this is really important.  How is someone going to know that they are on the wrong path if their teacher does not point it out to them?  It is not “telling the student what to do” but simply pointing out where they think they are going wrong and letting the student decide.  It becomes wrong when the teacher tries to control the student, but very often that is not happening.  What I have found in my own path is that the advice I have had from my teachers, which I ignored, was pretty much spot on. It was the stuff I did listen to which did not work

Occultism has to be an extremely flexible art so hanging onto ideas often is a blind.  I have had to give up some really cool occult philosophies in my time because I did not think they worked.  A person that hangs onto ideas, or argues them without understanding them, or refuses to listen, will not make it on this path.
