Invocation to Hekate on a Waning Moon

What follows is ancient invocation is to be used each time you invoke Hekate from the time of the full Moon to the day before the new Moon. It is taken from PGM IV. 2241-2358 it can be found in my Helios Unbound book. The translation E.N. O’Neil is from the H.D. Betz edition it was tweaked for more modern language and for the function to make it more accessible, and practical (the original was a curse). The vocalisation for the barbaric names is underneath the Greek.

The Waning Moon is used for all magic that requires something to be reduced or banished – bad habits, or destructive people, poverty etc. The invocation involves the darker aspects of Hekate and when used you will find it brings out the darker aspects of your soul. These are useful for some sort of magic and should be noted rather than feared or rejected. As they arise you should meditate upon them and allow them to be placed under the control of Hekate.

In this way, Hekate becomes the goddess of your Lower Genius in the same way that Helios becomes symbolic of your higher. You will need a candle with the name Ἑκάτη engraved on it and an old ornate house key which you paint silver with Ἑκάτη painted on the shaft. While the titles of Hekate in this invocation might seem strange, or unnecessary, they are actually micro-invocations to the various dæmons who serve her.

RITUAL

You should prepare your ritual space in your usual way, with purification and consecration.

Hail Holy Light, Ruler of Tartaros,
You who strikes with rays;
Hail, Holy Beam, who whirls up from the darkness
and disrupts everything.
I’ll invoke and may you hear my holy words. Reveal and remove those things which stand in the way of my destiny so that my way shall be clear.
Awesome destiny is always subject to you.
Thrice-bound goddess, set yourself free.
Rage against those things which stand in the way of my destiny.

As your light wanes may these things pass with them.
Klotho spins out her threads for you.

And remove that which is false from my life.

Assent, blessed one, Goddess.
Awaken to me your powers to control my soul
Which is of your nature.

Reveal and remove those things which stand in the way of my destiny so that my way shall be clear.

For I know your light in detail,
I am your magician, your minister and witness to your divine power.
I conjure you by this potent night
In which your light is last to fade.
Kerberos opens and does not close his mouth.
He opens Tartaros’ gate in Rage .
Armed with a thunderbolt, he comes forth from the gloom.
Stir yourself, Mene,
You who need the Sun,
guard of the dead,
I implore you, Goddess, by your subtle light,
I conjure you cunning, lofty, swift, crested one, by your dæmonic epaulettes of power.
You who draws valiant swords,
Healer, with forethought, far-famed, goading one,
Swift-footed, brave, Darkness,
Brimo, Immortal, heedful, Persian,
Pastoral, Akyoue, gold-crowned, elder goddess,
Shining, sea-goddess, ghostly, beautiful,
She who reveals, sailer, aimer,
Self-gendered, headband wearing
Glorious, leader of hosts, goddess
of Dodona, and of Ida, with sorrows fresh,
wolf-formed,
Humanity fears you for you have been destructive,
quick, grim-eyed, shrill-screaming,
Thasian, Mene, nethermost one, beam-embracer and saviour,
dog-shaped, spinner of Fate, all-giver,
Long-lasting, glorious, helper, queen, bright, wide-aimer,
vigorous, holy and benign.
You are all these things,
Immortal, shrill-voiced, glossy-locked,
flowering, divine, with golden face, friend to humanity,
Minoan, goddess of childbirth, Thuban, long-suffering, astute,
malevolent.
With rays for hair, shooter of arrows,
You are full of cunning and the deliverer from fear;
I am Hennes, The Elder, chief of all magicians, I am Isis’ father.
Hear:
ΗΩ ΦΟPΒΑ ΒΡΙΜΩ ΣΑΧΜΙ ΝΕΒΟΥΤΟ ΣΟΥΑΛΗΘ
‘E-AW FOR-VA VRIM-AW SACH-MEE NE-VOO-TO SOO-AL-‘ETH

For I have hidden your magic symbol [hold the candle in left hand] within myself. I have your key [hold key] and opened the bars of Kerberos,
the guard of Tartaros and premature night.
I plunged into darkness. I whirl the wheel for you;
Gaze at me as you gaze at yourself:
For I am your mirror, the love charm of the Nile goddess,
Until you cast the shadowy light from your eyes.
Mare, Kore, dragoness, lamp, lightning, flash, star, lion, she-wolf
I know your good and great majestic names,
Which illuminate the heavens.
The Earth drinks dew and is pregnant;
The universe increases and declines;

Reveal and remove those things which stand in the way of my destiny so that my way shall be clear.

Awaken my awareness of you within me. For I am your child.

Allow me to speak to your spirits so that they see you in me.

Reveal and remove those things which stand in the way of my destiny so that my way shall be clear.
