Humans get the world they deserve

I grew up in a world where intelligence was valued, racism was bottled up along with sexism. It was there, but it was not socially acceptable. War was unlikely, even when the Russians and Americans were more likely to nuke each other. I dodged London terrorist attacks and yet was unfrightened. I could put them into a perspective.  This world and mindset was built from the political and ethical choices of my parents and immediate ancestors following two terrible wars, which they were determined to avoid at all costs. Now all those values are being swept away in a tide of fear and hate and that perspective is gone. Women and minorities are being smugly discriminated against, science is the new

Calming Poseidon – Earthquaker

Poseidon is the Ancient Greek God of Earthquakes. With the recent earthquakes in Italy, I decided to try and find out what was going on and what was a possible cause. Earthquakes were often signs of a God or Goddess’s displeasure (something which are a form of imbalance).  This imbalance might be a slight by humans.  If it is, then it is not literal but symbolic. The narrative with the God or Goddess might appear biblical with much talk of smiting etc but the reality is that something has gone wrong. Modern people have lost the ability to ascribe natural disasters to the Gods, or God or anything other than natural forces. Thus, they become disconnected from them and lose their

Dark of the Golden Dawn

Most people coming into the Golden Dawn talk about it being “light,” “nice” and “spiritual”, when actually the outer order is dark giant skip packed full of rubbish which the candidate has to sort out within five initiations. Modern GD groups make a great deal of the outer order grades, and they are vital for the process that the system starts in a magician before they start to handle the heavy lifting magical work of the second order. For a while I have wondered why it was that people join the Golden Dawn only to leave while in the outer order. Of course, you could argue that the “golden dawn was not for them” but actually those who leave often make right

Anti-clockwise circumambulation down under

I had a question on Facebook from a bloke running a GD group in Auckland who is under pressure from his Wiccan members to change the circumambulation to anti-clockwise instead of clockwise to match the magnetic flows in the southern hemisphere. There is a believe that the earth is a magnet and that the polarity in the Northern Hemisphere is the opposite than the southern hemisphere. This is why water goes down the sink in a reversed direction in the southern hemisphere. Apparently all this is confirmed by various earth spirits which operate down-under. Therefore, some wiccan groups have taken to circumambulating anti-clockwise to open and clockwise to close. Like many myths there is a sort of truth behind the idea, but it

Book Review Communing with the Spirits

One of the big advantages of print-on-demand is that it opens up the field to practical magicians who are writing on subjects which are too daring for the commercial publishers, like working with spirits. Martin Coleman’s Communing with the Spirits: The Magical Practice of Necromancy is a book written by a bloke who has a system and it works for him.  It comes with all the useful advice you need to work his system and gives some interesting insights into the whole business of working with the dead. I want to make this clear that this is not a field of interest for me. When I work with the dead and ancestor’s it is an adjunct to my other work.  But it

Charlene’s “I’ve been to the 5=6 but I’ve never been to me”

When I was 14 there was a terrible song called "I have been to Paradise but I've Never been to Me" about a woman who had an interesting life but after living it to the full claims she would have rather have been a housewife  stayed at home and had a couple of kids.  It was a song designed for parody and I wrote one which was my party song for a while.  I can unfortunately remember the lyrics and they were rather rude and not particularly good Perigrine Wildoak reminded me of the song the other day and I had another go at the lyrics only this time with a Golden Dawn theme. Consider it channelled by a secret chief

Drawing down the spirits – review

Drawing down the spirits, by Kenaz Filan and Raven Kaldera is an interesting book which shows much more than the practical techniques of “spirit possession.” It reveals a lot about modern paganism and its problems with mythic reality. The book came recommended to me because I was interested in beefing up my system of working with what in the Western Mystery Tradition we call “contacts.”   The writers come from the Haitian Tradition and the Northern Tradition which is much more hands on than many of the Western Mystery Tradition feels comfortable with. The book is packed full of real, practical advice and techniques and explains the processes and above all the levels of spirit possession from the most basic god form work

God and good and evil

During the Italian earthquake a church bell dislodged itself and fell into a house and killed two children and while Pope Francis offered his prayers to the 275 victims of the earthquake he did not mention God being involved. It struck me as if the Church was ignoring an event which was of symbolic importance.  I posted onto Facebook: "The Pope says he is praying for all the earthquake victims... that is nice. How does he explain what his God was up to when a bell from one his churches dislodged during the quake and killed [an entire family]*? God clearly didn't like them right? Apparently no one else is saying this. However it is an obvious question... if something bad

Table of Shewbread issues

The Table of Shewbread is an important diagram within the Golden Dawn’s 1=10, and yet when anyone is required to draw it, they discover that it creates more questions than anyone can supply answers. In the Magical Order of the Aurora Aurea we used a colour version of the 1=10 as shown in Pat Zalewski’s Inner Order of the Golden Dawn (pictured).  The colouring of the diagram came from a Whare Ra member and was based on an AO paper. However our order also requires people to draw the diagram in a workbook and from that a member came back to me with the following question:– Why does it differ from the Stella Matutina version printed in Israel Regardie (pictured)? The
